Associations, charities and professional bodies

There are many associations to support you and your children, including charities and professional bodies. We have provided links to some sites that our clients find useful. Talking Point
Talking Point is the website run by the charity ICAN dedicated to children’s speech, language and communication. It is designed for parents and people who work with children as well as children and young people themselves. Talking Point helps you to identify if a child is having difficulties or falling behind and offers signposting for further help. This site contains valuable resources which can be downloaded and used to support children, and links to other places that can help. www.talkingpoint.org.uk

National Literacy Trust
The National Literacy Trust is a charity that endeavours to improve literacy skills in children and adults. It has some great information and downloadable resources on how to help your child communicate including: communicating with babies, “What's life in a baby buggy like?”, television and early language development, and bilingualism. www.literacytrust.org.uk

Asperger Syndrome
On the www.tonyattwood.com.au website you will find resources related to Asperger Syndrome for parents, professionals and people with Asperger Syndrome and their partners. It also includes Tony’s presentation schedule: it is well worth hearing him speak. www.tonyattwood.com.au

ICAN

ICAN is a charity set up to support children with speech and language difficulties. www.ican.org.uk

National Autistic Society
The NAS provides an immense source of information, training and also details of local groups.  Essential  for anyone looking at this diagnosis. Great link on toilet training!  www.autism.org.uk

CLAPA : The Cleft Lip & Palate Association
CLAPA is a voluntary organisation providing support and information for those with, and affected by, cleft lip and palate, including their families. It has a network of local groups run by volunteers throughout the UK. www.clapa.com

SCOPE
SCOPE is a charity supporting children and adults with disabilities. It is particularly concerned with people with cerebral palsy. The website is a good source of information and particularly about encouraging communication. www.scope.org.uk

Down Syndrome Association
This charity provides information on all apects of living with Down Syndrome at any age. They give advice to new parents and anyone experiencing difficulites. They also offer training and courses. www.downs-syndrome.org.uk
 
Down Syndrome Educational
This charity helps children with Down syndrome to achieve their individual potential and to live more fulfilling and rewarding lives. This website is a must  if you are interested in learning more about Down Syndrome, with courses and online training for professionals and parents. The site has comprehensive  ebooks on a wide range of issues, including several on speech and language development in children with Down Syndrome, which describe numerous approaches for supporting children’s communication development. www.dseinternational.org

TEACCH
TEACCH offers a really useful approach that uses structure and visual resources to support people with autism and learning difficulties. It provides training courses and the techniques are  widely used with individuals and in schools. www.teacch.com
