First words

These activities will be useful if your child is ready to start responding to and using single words or to expand his or her vocabulary of single words.

Books

Books are a wonderful way of encouraging first words as they allow for the child to hear the words repeated frequently in context and they start to make a link between the word or sound and the picture. Don't forget to make the sounds for the animals and transport as children often start with these before they say the words.   Try to choose books with a very simple layout with just one or two pictures on each page. This will help your child understand the meaning of the words. Here are some of my favourite books.
Feeling book
This lovely little book was recommended by a parent. Children will enjoy the tactile pages and there are simple pictures for young children. Make the animal sounds as your child explores the pages to encourage your child to copy and make the sounds.
Flap books
Spotted a child enjoying these books with his mother. The flaps lift to show the same animal  or object underneath providing opportunities for  the adult to repeat the word and the child to hear the word in different contexts. Great for picking up new words.

One of the children I work with loves these books. These two little board books have  high-contrast pictures suitable for learning first words! The simple pictures have a shiny red foil finish which children will love to touch and explore.

Engaging animal pictures
A personal favourite as I used to read this with my own children when they were small. The pictures are simple with a few tiny animals to spot on some of the pages such as the bee and the spider. The bee sounds make the children laugh and I usually sing "Incey wincey spider".

Easy to follow layout and bright feely photo pictures
I particularly like the simple design of this book with one main picture on each page to focus on, which makes it easier for young children to follow.  The pictures are bright clear photos with textures and shiny areas to stroke and feel. There's a fleecy sock, a fluffy dog and teddy's soft, furry ears.

Always on the hunt for resources, I saw this book in a garden centre shop and thought it was great! Nice simple photographs on each page.
